Moraine

An alluvial fan happens when a fast-moving mountain stream empties out onto a relatively flat plain. All of the sediment it was carrying falls out as the water slows down. (USGS)

Alluvial Fan

A former tributary glacier valley that is incised into the upper part of a U-shaped glacier valley, higher than the floor of the main valley. Hanging valley streams often enter the main valley as waterfalls. Note the hanging glacier on the slope above. These valleys originate high on the wall of a glacier valley and descend only part of the way to the surface of the main glacier (in this case, the Hooker Glacier). Avalanching and icefalls are the mechanisms for ice and snow transfer to the valley floor below. (USGS)

Hanging Valley

Hooker Glacier is a valley glacier--a glacier that flows for all or most of its length within the walls of a mountain valley. This is the location of Hooker Glacier's terminus (the lower-most end of a glacier). On the slopes adjacent to this terminus, there is evidence of landslide deposits covering the glacier. Typically, proglacial lakes form in bedrock basins scoured by the glacier. They enlarge as the glacier retreats. Sometimes they are dammed by an End or Recessional Moraine. (USGS)

Debris (Talus) Cone

Fine-grained, silt-size sediment formed by the mechanical erosion of bedrock at the base and sides of a glacier by moving ice. The distinct gray color of these icebergs and the surrounding water is a result of suspended sediment. (USGS)

The Holocene epoch, which began around 12,000 years ago, marks the current geological time period and has been marked by warmer average temperatures since the Pleistocene.
