The Geysir area contains extinct underlying volcanic chambers from the Haukadalur Valley geothermal activity and from volcanic vents that provide residual heat from the Laugarfjall system. The geothermal system is contained by basalt bedrock with water temperatures heated upwards of 200-250°C. The heat is transferred through deeper groundwater flows at 1-2 km depth moving through northeastern trending** fractures**. The geothermal activity produces geysers, fumaroles, and mudpots.
