Upper Grinnell Lake was formed from the Grinnell Glacier meltwater.

Where Grinnell Glacier terminates into Upper Grinnell Lake ice calving occurs. Debris embedded in the ice becomes ice rafted debris. Ice rafting is a transport mechanism. As the ice raft melts, the debris is deposited onto the lake sediments (Photograph by David R. Butler).

Lateral Moraine

The nose of the Salamander Glacier points to the Diorite Sill. The Diorite Sill shows the intrusion of magmatic rock between the Siyeh Limestone layers formed in the late Proterozoic.
