A blend of igneous and sedimentary rock deposited during glacial periods and the warmer, milder periods between glaciation, known as an interglacial (Thordarson and Höskuldsson, 2002; Denk et al., 2011; Sykora, 2020). The pillow lava that is created in subaqueous conditions found in subglacial volcanoes is part of the mountain's formation. The glaciers moving around the feature sculpted it into its unique shape.

The Kirkjufell River is another notable physical feature in this area. The origin of the water stream is a source in Helgrindur, which is an eastern mountain ridge. The water moves through the canyon areas contributing to erosion and formation of Proskuldar, or cliffs, as well as the Kirkjufellsfoss, the waterfalls of Kirkjufell.
